Coquitlam Adanac netminder Nick Rose has been the big news item in the Western Lacrosse Association this season, but the guy in the Langley Thunder’s net has a history of headline making this time year and he did it again Sunday.

Brodie MacDonald, who backstopped the Thunder to the WLA title last season as a rookie last season, turned away 34 of 37 shots in the opener of the best-of-seven league finale Sunday in Langley, propelling his team to a 7-3 win.

Rose, who was recently picked the league’s MVP and top goaltender for 2012, made 52 saves for Coquitlam.

Game 2 is Tuesday in Coquitlam.

Garrett Billings has two goals and two assists for the Thunder, while Lewis Ratcliff supplied three assists and Joel McCready had two goals. Single goals came from Brett Hickey, Athan Iannucci and Rob Van Beek.

Steve McKinlay, Jason Jones and Daryl Veltman scored for the Adanacs. Dane Dobbie, who had 19 goals in a six-game semifinal against the Victoria Shamrocks, was held to two assists.

Coquitlam did seem to be pushing late against the Thunder, but McCready came out from behind the net and snuck a low shot past Rose to make it 6-3 at 16:58 of the third. Van Beek scored into an empty net at 19:01.
